Seeking Shellfishing Stories

We are delighted to be assisting with an exciting project that will uncover and share stories of shellfishing in South Devon this November!

The ‘Guardians of the Reef’ project will be delivered in partnership with Community Interest Company Storylines and the South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen Association. It consists of a series of heritage events, exhibitions and film screenings thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The team have already undergone 3 collection events in Salcombe down in a fisherman’s store on Fish Quay, recording the memories of fishermen past and present.

The next event is here at The Cricket! This will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th November between 11am-3pm on each day. We invite you to drop in and share your experiences of shellfishing in South Devon. It would also be great for people to bring any relevant photographs or objects.

The sessions are completely free and everyone is welcome. These collection days are being supported by Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum who are supplying a display of archive photographs and artefacts and will be scanning personal photographs on the Wednesday from 11-1pm.

Following these collection events, as well as individual recordings in people’s homes, the project will weave together audio recordings, photographs and footage to create a series of digital stories, films and an exciting travelling exhibition. The full recordings will also be archived through Devon County Archives, Devon Rural Archives, Salcombe Museum and the Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum preserving them for future generations.

The project will culminate with a series of community celebrations over Spring and Summer 2018, which will include displays, talks and screenings of the digital stories and films generated throughout the project. A longer-term exhibition will run at Salcombe Museum from April-October 2018 and a travelling display will tour local community festivals and events along the coast such as Crabfest in Salcombe and Paignton Harbour Festival.
